TDATA COMPUTER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING, Year 3 (compulsory)
Examiner:
Docent Stig-Göran Larsson
Eligibility:
For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.
Course specific prerequisites
The course builds on knowledge from the first two years of the D-program. From this 50 p is required. For each project the supervisors will then inform the students of other required prerequisites.
Aim
Working in projects is common for engineers. In projects several tasks are going on simultaneously. It is important for students to meet this working form also in the education. In this course each student group works with a project that is problem-oriented, time-limited and cooperation-based. The purpose is to introduce a work methodology, where students train their ability to
- define and analyze the problem
- use models and methods that are useful for system development
- cooperate and communicate within the group
- inform about and report project status at various stages
Goal
After completing the course students shall have
- identified and formulated a project description
- assigned roles and determined principles for cooperation
- created a time plan
- identifies knowledge requirements and searched for information
- proposed and evaluated solutions
- given oral presentations and written reports
Content
A short course on system development covers
- working in a team
- managing and controling projects
- system development and models for devlopment work
- requirements handling
- follow up on project planning and analysis, verification and evaluation of requirements
- iterations and risks
Three oral presentations in seminars
- presentation focusing on the project task and the project plan
- halftime-presentation focusing on the actual project status
- final presentation and demonstration of the whole project och the resultat
Written documentation
- project homepage with relevant documents as project diary, personal time and activity reports etc
- project plan
- final report.
Besides this the content depends on the project. The projects may use knowledge from several subject areas from the compulsory part of the D-program and from some related elective courses. Thus the students will also take elective courses that in various ways will contribute to the project. If needed project related self-study courses may be arranged.
Organisation
The projects are carried out in groups of 5-10 students. Each project has a customer and a supervisor. The course goes on during year 3 and the credits are distributed as 1+1+2+3 for periods 1-4.
It starts with the short course on system development. It has compulsory attendance and home assignments. Each group writes a project plan.
Thereafter the project work is carried out according to project plans with common check points for all projects. At each checkpoint a seminar is held. Attention is compulsory. The project ends in a day devoted to the final seminars and demonstrations of results. Each project is also documented in final written report.
Literature
Östen Oskarsson, "Programutveckling i liten skala - en praktisk handbok", Studentlitteratur 1994.
Examination
Pass on all reporting done by the group. Each student will be graded. Grades are based partly on visual group results in form of documents, presentations and end result, partly on students personal work in the group (cooperation, organisation, quantitive och qualitative ).
