Course specific prerequisites

Basic knowledge of electromagnetic field theory.

Aim

The aim of this course is to give a basic description and understanding of high frequency electromagnetic wave phenomena as they occur in modern applications as e g fibre optics, laser and microwave techniques and microelectronics.

Content

Part A:
Transmission lines; stationary and transient situations, the Smith diagram.
Wave guides; parallell plates, rectangular, circular and
dielectric waveguides.
Antennas; dipole and group antennas, radiation diagram, effective antenna area.

Part B:
(i) Propagation of light pulses in optical fibres, dispersion, transmission
capacity, high bit rate optical communication, dispersion compensation,
soliton transmission systems.

(ii) High frequency electronics, two port analysis, stability, noise, microwave transistors.
