Eligibility:
For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.
Aim
The aim of this course is to understand the social implications of new information and communication technologies.
Content
The topics to be covered include internet commerce, uses of the internet in the home, computer networks in organizations, the origins of the internet, virtual 'communities', and networked virtual reality. We will also examine how social networks can be studied from a different perspectives. Among the issues to be addressed are: how does computer-mediated-communication differ from face-to-face interaction? And how do 'virtual communities relate to 'real' communities and organizations? To examine these questions, we will have to examine human communication in a wider context, and also theories about the relation between technology and society. The focus thoughout, however, will be on the interplay between computers as communication tools and contemporary social change.
