Aim

The overall aim of the course is to ensure basic legal knowledge and adapted skills in legal methodology for students at Chalmers, focused on their future professional life when it comes to decision-making, and as responsible in project management. The aim of the course is, based on the purpose, after completed course the student will have fulfilled necessary knowledge and understanding of the legal conditions in the justice system, the central legislation, organization and management, sustainability, ethics, and technology and business specific legal relationship, and that limited scope for applying legal methodology in actual business situations as well as to ensure compliance with legislation / other requirements.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Give an explanation of common legal phrases and terms in Swedish and/or Latin, and of the structure, function and contents of the Swedish legal system (LM 1).
Explain the differences between civil law, public law (criminal law) with its different functions and applications(LM 2).
Give an explanation legal method and in a practical way being able to apply fundamental parts of contract law, purchase law, administrative law, real estate law, credit law such as promissory, obligation law, pawn, warrants and other securities, obligation law, insolvency law including seize and secure, bankruptcy, warrant sale and intellectual property law regarding copyright law, trademark law and patent law (LM 3).
Give an explanation of purpose and application of sectoral standard agreements (LM 4).
Give an explanation of systematic approach on work environment, fundamental systematic of labour law and its different functions and terms, regarding entrepreneurs, employees, business management and contractors as well as being able to recognize limitations and assess when there is a need for legal expertise (LM 5).

Content

Block 1: The basics of law and legal method
The basics of law and legal method sustainability and ethics. Fundamentals of legal framework, judicial process, the legal sources, court processes, liability issues; legal responsibility of civil and public law. Furthermore, the ethics of the legal perspective. The different forms of legal subjects, association law, contract law, power of attorney different forms and its boundaries.

Block 2: Contract law, purchase law and business law
Practical appliance of juridical method regarding contract law, purchase law, administrative law, real estate law, credit law such as promissory, obligation law, pawn, warrants and other securities, obligation law, insolvency law including seize and secure, bankruptcy, warrant sale. Further more intellectual property law regarding copyright law, trademark law and patent law, insurance and indemnity.

Block 3: Rights and responsibilities of the subject of labor law
Commonly used standard agreements, it’s purpose parties and appliance. Systematic work on safety against accidents and protection against criminal action. Fundamental systematic of labour law and the different functions regarding entrepreneurs, employees, business management and contractors as well as being able to recognize limitations and assess when there is a need for legal expertise.

Scope of the course
The scope of the course is determining the width and depth of the course content. Some areas not included in the course is for example trade law, import/export and questions regarding custom. Organisation

The course includes lectures and seminars. The course is conducted by several teachers alternatively external guest teachers who will be coordinated in relation to the course's
content and design.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined through written examination The course contains compulsory parts as well as assignments. To acquire a final grade of the course it is required passing on both written exam and assignments. Permitted material on the exam: Collection of law text, course literature, personal notes and teaching material in the form of Power Point documents.
