Eligibility:


In order to be eligible for a second cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme that owns the course. (If the second cycle course is owned by a first cycle programme, second cycle entry requirements apply.)
Exemption from the eligibility requirement: Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling these requirements.

Managerial Economics TEK255 or equivalent
Industrial Management TEK250 or equivalent

Aim

The course aims to impart a knowledge of project-work, i.e. the organisation leadership and control of project activity. The course also aims to prepare the student for participating in project-related work. This will be achieved by practising skills in communication and group dynamics. It deals with issues such as general knowledge on what is meant by a project and when project organisation can/should be used, project leadership, various approaches for organisation of projects, project start-ups, project evaluation, etc. It provides insight into group interaction theory as well as skills training in the subject. The course encompasses both practical and theoretical components.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

At the end of the course students will be able to:
- Describe basic project management concepts and tools
- Apply project management theories to analyze the specific characteristics of industrial projects and based on this suggest appropriate ways to manage the projects
- Frame, analyze and solve managerial problems in project settings using appropriate literature
- Use literature to critically evaluate project management models
- Structure and organize projects of a not too complicated nature

Content

The course is about managing projects. This means that the course contains general knowledge on project management and reflects such knowledge in contingences occurring when dealing with projects in technology-based firms. The following themes could be identified in the course's subject area:
- Organizing projects and organizational characteristics
- Project leadership and learning
- Project planning and control

Organisation

The course has three main components: lectures, literature seminars, and a project work performed in groups. The literature seminars requires active participation and preparation. The project work in groups is an assignment to describe and analyze a real life business project. After the lectures on basics in project management there will be a test assessing the basic knowledge on project management. In the home exam theory and practical knowledge should be integrated and various theories reflected against each other.

The course literature will be decided at the start of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined in three parts:
1.-Project Management Basics (1.5 hp) is an examination, graded U/G.
2.-The Research Project Work (3 hp) is a written assignment, graded U/G.
3.-The Home Exam (3 hp) is a written assignments, graded U/G.

The overall course grade is based on the sum of the marks of the above modules, graded U/3/4/5. Se further the Course PM.
