In order to be eligible for a second cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme that owns the course. (If the second cycle course is owned by a first cycle programme, second cycle entry requirements apply.)
Exemption from the eligibility requirement: Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling these requirements.

Course specific prerequisites

The course is not offered every academic year

Qualification for the master programme or Civil and Environmental Engineering or Human Geography with a profile in planning or Bachelor of Science in Conservation, with major in Integrated Conservation of Built Environments.


The aim of the course is to give knowledge and understanding of the existing built environment as a resource for contemporary use. It is further to study and scrutinize theories, methods and processes in the field of conservation and transformation. A specific issue is to observe how new additions, in smaller or larger scale, are brought together with an existing building and its surrounding, and the ideas behind. A purpose is then to discuss and apply different views and policies held by experts and stakeholders in society, historically and today.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

describe and analyse the built environment as a resource, - cultural, architectural, technical, environmental and economical
- describe and analyse views, ideas and policies that are practiced by different professions and stake-holders in the process of conservation and transformation
- analyse and reflect on the relation between cultural and architectural values
- analyse and reflect on the relation between architectural design and building technique in an historical perspective - be in the know of building materials and craft from historical and contemporary periods, and how they can be combined and applied today
- apply the knowledge and understanding in a conservation process, and cooperate with other professionals


The number of participants in the studio is limited. As the studio is within the master program Design for sustainable development (MPDSD), students who are admitted to MPDSD will have priority. Show up at the first day of the course. Students not attending the first course day will lose their place and it will be offered to the next in line. The course is based on comparative case studies on ongoing or realized projects on conservation, rebuilding, transformation and completion. The study will include analysis, reviews and proposals of complementary or alternative solutions. Lectures, seminars, study-visits and literature are included.
