Eligibility:

Aim

The purpose of this course is to enable students to complete their technical training with knowledge and skills in selected non- technical subjects, primarily topics which have connections to the professional and personal development and prepare for a successful engineering career.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

The student should after the course have increased their knowledge, understanding and skills in a number of areas that have connections to the professional and personal development. This includes mainly areas such as leadership, presentation techniques, stress management, mental training, creativity, ergonomics, self-esteem, rhetoric, communication, group dynamics, and career planning.

Content

The course is organized around four independent but interrelated parts (1) guest lectures, (2 ) mandatory literature, (3) exercises and (4) an own work that is and presented orally and in writing. The four parts are briefly described below:

Guest Lectures: Guest lectures cover different parts of the topics that are described under the heading of learning outcomes, including leadership, creativity, ergonomics, stress management, rhetoric, mental training and different aspects of the engineer's professional role.

Mandatory literature: The required reading deals with about the same topics as the guest lectures, but otherwise it has no direct link to these. The required reading is intended primarily for self-study.

Exercises: Group exercises consists among other things of workshops (which deals with various topics in the course), exercises in presentation skills, literature seminars and mini-lectures in selected topics.

Own work:  Each student will choose a theme to be individually studied and reported both orally and in writing. This work includes typical to read one additional book on the chosen theme and to seek additional information on the topic on various websites. The oral presentations are made for the other students in the group. Examples of themes that can be selected within one's own work is: rhetoric, ergonomics, stress management, intercultural communication, positive psychology, self-esteem, mental training, creativity, various aspects of the brain, leadership (different aspects), coaching, personal effectiveness , career planning, study skills, mindfulness, cognitive science, etc. The theme as well as the books that are chosen for the own work must be approved by the teacher.

Literature

Literature in the field of leadership / personal development / mental training (the titles will be announced later).

Examination

The examination consists of three parts:
1. Mandatory participation in all guest lectures and exercises.
2. Exam with essay questions and quizzes on the required reading.
3. Approved written reports and oral presentations.
