Eligibility:


In order to be eligible for a second cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme that owns the course. (If the second cycle course is owned by a first cycle programme, second cycle entry requirements apply.)
Exemption from the eligibility requirement: Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling these requirements.

Aim

To learn about many different teaching strategies and how modeling can be used as a tool for teaching.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe didactic models of learning
  • motivate didactic decisions based on the didactic theory and didactics language
  • discuss and practically apply a series of mathematics education approach, and evaluate the outcomes of these (where also the evaluation method must be critically examined)
  • stimulate learning
  • characterize different forms of knowledge, especially mathematical knowledge
  • science theory of mathematics and its research methods
  • describe the concept of models, and analyze and evaluate mathematical models
  • evaluate the motivational aspects of mathematics as a tool and mathematics as its own area of expertise

Content

What is the quality of teaching? And how do you create it? These are two fundamental issues that will follow this course. We will discuss the different pedagogical/didactical models for learning. In particular, the concept of the model is discussed and analysis from different perspectives: an epistemological perspective, even more specifically on how the concept model used in the various scientific disciplines, and how to proceed in order to construct and use their own mathematical model. In addition, various teaching materials, in various forms, to be discussed and analyzed.

  • Theory of science, especially mathematics theory of science
  • Theory and practice in educational sciences. Exploiting didactic research findings in teaching.

Organisation

Mainly lectures, seminars and workshops, but also a project including its presentation (written, orally etc).
