TKTFY ENGINEERING PHYSICS, Year 3 (compulsory elective)
Examiner:
Professor
Jan Swenson
Eligibility:
In order to be eligible for a first cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme(s) that has the course included in the study programme.
Course specific prerequisites
Experimental physics 1
Aim
Introduces new forms of experimental work where the knowledge from earlier theoretical courses are used.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
Develope the ability to do good experimental physics.
Learn to formulate problems oneself.
Buildt up experimental set ups.
Make accurate measurements with advanced equipment.
Content
This is a laboratory course with a main goal of developing experimental skills. Students work with three projects throughout the school year in the area of Optics, Thermodynamics , Quantum Physics or Solid State Physics. Each project consitss of two parts; one that is mandatory to work with to get a passing grade and a second part where students address a more complex aspect of the project based on their own ideas. A technical repport based on the work carried out has to be submitted for grading. Studnets work in pairs and before getting access to the lab a 15 minutes interview with the instructor is scheduled a week in advance of the labbtime for presentation of the main ideas how the students intend to solve the problem.
Organisation
Students work in a group of two with 3 different projects covering different areas of physics. To carry out the experimental work students have acces to advanced equipement over a 3-4 day period. Projects are alocated well in advance of the laboration time.
Literature
Reference articles, manuals and additional reading material (scientific articles relevant for the project work) are available in the Physics Library as well as on the webb page of the course .
Examination
Each project contains two parts: a basic project and an extra project. The former has to be solved to get a passing grade (3). To get a higher grade (4 or 5) student has to work with the extraproject part. Grading is based on the submitted technical repport. Studnet have to make all projects and get at least agrade 3 on all of these to get a passing grade in the course
