Eligibility:
In order to be eligible for a first cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme(s) that has the course included in the study programme.
Aim
The course aims to provide a deeper understanding of the interplay between technological change and social change. The course provides knowledge of typical patterns in technological and industrial change. It also provides an introduction to current research in the field. The emphasis in the course is on the period from 1750 until today.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Describe and analyze the interplay between technological change on the one hand and cultural, economic, political and social change on the other
- Identify factors that cause technological change
- Describe and analyze the mechanisms of technological change
- Explain and interpret historical processes
- Describe and analyze theoretical concepts and explanatory models in the historical sciences
- Problematize the social and cultural consequences of technological change, in the past and today
Content
History of technology is the historical study of technology and technological change. Themes and issues covered in the course are:
- Factors that cause technological change
- The mechanisms of technological change
- Technology transfer
- Technology and science as two different knowledge traditions
- The development of the engineering profession
- The first and the second industrial revolution as well as the information revolution
- The development of large technological systems
- Military technology
