Eligibility:

In order to be eligible for a first cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme(s) that has the course included in the study programme.

Course specific prerequisites

Basic courses in Digital & Microcomputer Electronics, and Electrical Circuit Theory, or corresponding skills.

Aim

One area where electrical engineers has a role is in the automation field. This course will provide insight into and knowledge of the methods and equipment used in binary control of industrial processes, machinery and other facilities. The main part of the course consists of a project, starting from a functional specification of a automated system with many interacting functions in terms of both hardware and software, followed by the students design, function test and troubleshooting to at end the of the course reach a functioning equipment and present it in both oral and written report.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)


  • realise an extensive project in the area of logic control.

  • present logic solutions for two different types of controllers, one type of Programmable Logic Controller and one type of microcontroller.

  • manage program environments and design control programs for these equipments.

  • design components and circuit diagrams and realise the electrical circuits

  • find errors and verify the function.

  • document the construction, parts of it in English language (in cooperation with parallell course i English).

Content

The prime objective of this course is to provide knowledge of and insight into the analysis and design of event-based and time-based control systems which are used in all areas of industry and in products for controlling various kinds of processes and machines.

Organisation

The main part of the course is arranged as a project work in groups of nomaly two students. Each group have 40 hours obligatory laboratory time. During the first half of the course there is 12 lectures which present foundamentals needed for the project task. The project is presented in a written report, some parts in English, and oral presentation of the project. An oral presentation in English of material from the project are also included. The English-speaking parts are performed in cooperation with a parallel course in English (LSP580).

Examination

Approved completion of project tasks according project specification and passed oral and written report of the project work and pass a written test that is posted for more than half of the project.
