Eligibility:
In order to be eligible for a second cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme that owns the course. (If the second cycle course is owned by a first cycle programme, second cycle entry requirements apply.)
Exemption from the eligibility requirement:
Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling these requirements.
Course specific prerequisites
The course is open for students having completed their first 30 hec within a Master's Programme at Chalmers.
Aim
The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the notion of soci(et)al entrepreneurship, as well as provide an overview of the social entrepreneurship-specific aspects of business modeling, financing, and upscaling. Furthermore, the course will provide an opportunity for students to discuss and develop their prospective social entrepreneurial initiatives.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- Demonstrate an understanding of, and discuss various notions of social entrepreneurship.
- Demonstrate an understanding of, and discuss the phenomenon of social entrepreneurship, and the activities of social entrepreneurs, in relation to broader societal developments.
- Devise a sustainable business model for a social entrepreneurial venture.
- Show an aptitude in charting and approaching sources of finance for a social entrepreneurial venture.
- Describe different modes of upscaling a social entrepreneurial initiative or replicate a social innovation.
Content
The course will provide an opportunity for students involved in social entrepreneurship projects, or with the intention to start one, to broaden their knowledge in the subject matter and at the same time develop necessary tools and skills to develop the project further.
Organisation
The content of the course is arranged in four modules:
- Introduction and key concepts: What is social entrepreneurship? How does the concept relate to developments in wider society?
- Business models: What are the models for creating a social entrepreneurial venture that is sustainable (in the economic, social and environmental sense of the word)?
- Financing: What are the sources of financing for social entrepreneurial ventures?
- Upscaling and replication: What are the mechanisms by which one social entrepreneurial venture or social innovation can scale up and become replicated?

The students are graded on an individual basis in relation to written hand-ins and oral presentations as outlined in the course-pm.
