Basic knowledge in environmental science or environmental engineering


The course aims to provide students with an understanding of how to build constructive relationships with diverse stakeholders in practical contexts. Students gain practical skills and theoretical knowledge of both how to handle and manage the needs and interests of diverse stakeholders and of how to integrate stakeholders¿ varying types of expertise in relation to sustainability projects in different types of organisations. These include government authorities and intergovernmental organisations, although the course focuses mainly on industry. The course focuses on the types of cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills required to take leadership on sustainability projects and interact with stakeholders in each of these contexts.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

Describe the importance of managing stakeholders in sustainability projects

Describe the importance of stakeholder management for the sustainability of different types of organisations

Express the potential for conflict in practical contexts between the social, economic and environmental ¿pillars¿ of sustainable development

Demonstrate the ability to deal with and manage conflicts between the social, economic and environmental 'pillars' of sustainable development

Demonstrate the ability to deal with and manage the needs and conflicts of interest between different types of stakeholders

Apply leadership skills in association with the abovementioned conflicts

Draw upon multi-disciplinary literatures and information relevant for building constructive relationships with stakeholders

Demonstrate the ability to communicate and interact with diverse stakeholder groups


The course is divided into two lines of instruction. The first provides a theoretical understanding of the process and importance of managing stakeholders in the context of social, economic and environmental sustainability. The second provides the opportunity to develop and practice competences and skills that are useful for managing and interacting with stakeholders in the real world.


The course comprises a series of lectures, presentations and workshops. Lectures focus mainly on providing insights from the academic literature on stakeholder management and sustainable development. The course also includes presentations from experts in the field who describe their practical experiences of working with these issues. During workshops students participate in various exercises that aim to develop skills that are useful managing conflicts between and interacting with stakeholders (e.g. role-play). Students also work on a group project where they apply the skills and competences developed during the course.

Written home exam, a written group project completed throughout the duration of the course and the possibility to attain bonus points from workshops held throughout the course.
