Course specific prerequisites

Basic courses in materials science, solid mechanics and manufacturing technology.


The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to important manufacturing aspects of forming, joining and casting. Computer aided tools are introduced and used on a component.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Understand the fundamental theories of the finite element method and the finite difference method
- Create well-founded and realistic process models within metal forming and casting
- Define and compare the most common welding methods and their relation to products and production.
- Discuss the physical metallurgy of welding in steel and aluminium systems and judge weldability, phase transformations, developing microstructures, properties of welds and heat affected zones.
- Discuss the metallurgy applicable to casting of ferrous alloys as well as aluminium alloys
- Describe typical defects, generation of internal stresses and their influence on mechanical properties for both joining and casting.

A component chosen that can either be manufactured by forming and joining, or by casting is chosen as a study object and the lectures and exercises relate to this component. The course consists of three parts: forming, joining and casting. The finite element method is introduced and used to understand the manufacturing processes. Simulation of heat conduction during welding, in order to realize metallurgical aspects arising during welding. The finite difference method is used to understand casting. Welding and casting defects are treated and suitable NDT techniques are introduced. Defects and metallurgical development are important. During the course, study visits and laboratory sessions are made.

Each part of the course will be examined independently. Depending on which part project work will be graded projects or the student will also be assigned tasks that he/she gives an account for. These assignments will be graded. Written examination might also appear in some part of the course.
