Course specific prerequisites

A basic course in environmental science is a prerequisite, e.g. Environmental Technology for V. The course in Environmental Systems Analysis (VMI101) gives a suitable background, but is not a necessary requirement.
For applicants to the course from outside Chalmers the following previous education is required:
- 80 credit units at mathematical/natural science faculty or university of technology.
- 3 credit units environmental science.
- Documented computing skills, for example 10 credit units mathematics.

Aim

The course aims at providing an understanding of methods to assess the environmental impact of products in a life cycle perspective. The course gives the theoretical background for Life Cycle Assessment as a method, skills to use the tool and knowledge about its application areas and limitations.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- describe what life cycle assessment is and be familiar with its different fields of application, as well as its limitations.


- explain what requirements on methodologt are placed by the different fields of application.


- place demands on, recieve and critically review an LCA study conducted by others.


- conduct a life cycle assessment study on his/her own and to report it is a transparent way-

Content

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method for the analysis and assessment of the environmental impact of products. The life cycle perspective comprises raw material acquisition, production processes, use and waste treatment. LCA comprises calculation of the environmental load associated with the product under study, life cycle impact assessment and interpretation of the results. The course includes LCA methodology and applications. The application and use of LCA by different actors is covered.

Organisation

The course consists of lectures, smaller exercises performed in the classroom and a group project assignment. The lectures give the methodology for life cycle assessment, application areas, examples of applications and limitations. The exercises and the project assignment give a deeper understanding and skills in using the tool.
