Aim
The aim of the course is to work with the ethical and social aspects that is a consequence of the knowledge development in genetics and biotechnology. In addition, to provide methods and tools to identify, analyze, and discuss these aspects. The student should also be able to relate the course knowledge to the future roles as an engineer.
Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)
- To apply ethical concepts and theories on the problem that arises due to the knowledge development in genetics and biotechnology.
- To absorb and use methods for structuring ethical and social problems that are a consequence of the knowledge development in genetics and biotechnology.
- To identify ethical and social dilemmas in genetics and biotechnology.
- To discuss solutions to ethical and social dilemmas in genetics and biotechnology.
- To reason about ethical and social problems in genetics and biotechnology based on literature and practical examples.
Content
The course deals with the following topics: medical ethics concerning genetic diagnosis and modifications; enviromental issues related to genetically modified (GM) foods; ethical issues related to genetical research; change in the biotech industry and medical research. The course will deal with the problem of social and etihical changes arising from advances in engineering and natural sciences.
