IAR058 - Production project course - pre study

Aim

Industry demands engineers prepared to in a sustainable way solve open problems by applying acquired theoretical knowledge in a real-world context. With the aim to fulfill this requirement the courses cooperates closely with the industry, establishing learning in the light of how to use knowledge. This highlights the pragmatic turn in philosophy and the shift in focus from logical and formal linguistic aspects of rules to concern with what it means in practice to follow rules. The vision is to give students an opportunity to make their first traces in the industrial reality and to start building a personal network, an important prerequisite for a successful industry career. From this perspective, the courses also functions as a preparatory exercise before Master thesis work.

The purpose of the courses is that the students, through active collaboration in a project group, will receive training in:
- transferring well-founded scientific theory into a project planning report, solving a real industrial problem
- applying the foundations of modern production engineering, using engineering work procedures
- using information technology tools and if it's suitable plan for building virtual models for experiments and verification of analytical solutions fulfilling a project plan created in the preparatory course; IAR058 Production project course - prestudy.
The course is also intended to give students an opportunity to practice and develop a number of important general engineering skills: teamwork, report writing and presentation technique.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After having completed the course as a result of participating in the project group, the students should have gained experience of:
- put into action selected project methodology
- systematic realize a project plan:
- put the plans into practice, where work is divided into result specific activities, delegated and scheduled on a time axis
- assess engineering solutions in perspective of sustainable development, with consideration to both scientific and ethical aspects
- reflect the project results viewed through the lens of Immaterial Property Rights
- write a technical project report following a well established structure and policies of academic honesty, adding references and also figures and tables according to praxis.
- visualize the project results in an A3-poster and present this in an expo for other Chalmers students
- Perform a clear oral presentation of the project plan in allotted time, in front of two target groups:
- students from other project groups in the course, from a reflective perspective of learning
- representatives of the collaborating industrial company, with focus on project results
- give constructive feedback on another project group's work and respond to similar criticism on the own project group's work.

Content

Chalmers Master's Programme in Production Engineering put the focus on work integrated learning in a block which consists of two integrated courses called Production project course - pre study and Production project course - development. The Production project course - developing provides practical training in:

- project methodology
- immaterial property rights
- project group's needs of structured management and task distribution
- sustainable development, with consideration to both scientific and ethical aspects
- write a technical project report following a well established structure and policies of academic honesty.

Organisation

The project groups are formed in the preparatory course; IAR058 Production project course - prestudy.

To guide the students through their projects and to assist them with reaching the learning objectives, each group also in this development course have an supervisor with a meeting once a week at the university. These meetings typically include assistance on finding solutions for upcoming new problems, technical support on applied software packages, and support with writing the final report. The project groups continue with regular company visits meeting the industrial contact providing necessary input information and industrial experience. Furthermore, the course includes seminars aiming to give the students experience of communicating to n larger audience. Each group is also provided with a virtual project room for continuous communication and documentation. This virtual project room is used both to assist learning activities and for the supervisors to follow and assess the projects as well as examining some of the course learning objectives.

Examination

A completed project report is a prerequisite for grading. Respecting the learning objectives the assessment is taking place in the project groups judging the individual contribution to the project's results, its industrial relevance and the quality of presentations and opponent effort will also determine the grading: Fail, 3, 4 or 5.
