Aim

1. To giva an understanding of basic properties and limitations of fiber optic communication.
2. To explain the fundamental building blocks in a communication system: optical fibers, light emitters, amplifiers, and receivers.
3. To explain how communication systems can be constructed and evaluated.

Content

Optical fibers, light sources and emitters, optical detectors and receivers, optical amplifiers, system design and evaluation, coherent systems, multi-channel system, soliton communication systems.
Lectures, exercises, home assignments, and two laboratory exercises
