A basic course in Computer Communication

Aim

To give in depth knowledge on the technology which is used in Internet both in the network itself as in network service oriented application.

Content

The TCP/IP protocols and the access to Internet from a computer system. Important equipment in Internet like switches and routers. Routing in Internet. Algorithms for routing information calculation and dissemination in local-, regional- and wide area environments. Routing and switching. Protocols for sending traffic to more than one receiver (multicast). Internet and mobility. Network management, SNMP. Low level protocols and services, ICMP. Middleware in Internet like DNS, fileservers, Web-caching etc. Next generation protocol, IPv6. Security in networks.

Organisation

The course consists of two parts: The first is a lecture series and the second is laboratories where the students are working with equipment and software to establish communication and services over the network and will study how real networks work.
