Eligibility:

For single subject courses within Chalmers programmes the same eligibility requirements apply, as to the programme(s) that the course is part of.

Aim

The goal of the course is to give the student a basic knowledge
of numerical analysis, numerical algorithms and software for
technical and scientific applications.
The student should also learn the fundamentals of how to
use and develop numerical software, and how to the assess
the accuracy of the computed results.

Content

* Implementation and properties of computer arithmetic.
* Numerical linear algebra, and in particular sparse matrices and graph theory.
* Optimization and systems of non-linear equations.
* The solution of ordinary differential equations.
* Mathematical software and high performance computing.

Organisation

Lectures, problem solving sessions and work in the computer labs.

Literature

Compendium with lecture notes, exercises and solutions.
Reference literature: Michael T. Heath, Scientific Computing: An Introductory Survey, McGraw-Hill,
2002. Older editions will do as well.

Examination

Assignments and written exam.
