Aim:
The aim of the Master's program in Biotechnology is to educate skilled people for the biotechnology sector, primarily for research and development within industry and academia dealing with biomedicine, pharmaceuticals, biomaterials, food, and industrial biotechnology. The programme focuses on the interface between chemistry, biology and medicine, with engineering as a common working tool. Students should gain competencies in using engineering principles in the analysis and optimisation of biological systems, and in using integrated approaches for solving complex biotechnological problems.

Recommendations:
All students must attend the three obligatory courses: KMG060, KAM021 and KBT090. Students with limited background in biochemistry and / or molecular biology must attend KBB032. At least 5 of the following compulsory elective courses must be passed: FTF225, KBB057, KBB101, KBB111, KFK021, KKR063, KLI011, KLI021, KLI031, KLI041, KLI065, KMG046, KPO065, MVE360, TIF050, TIF125. We recommend that the five compulsory elective courses are taken during the first year of the programme, but they may in part be taken also during the second year. There are three tracks in the Master programme: Biomedicine & Biotechnology, Food & Health, and Biomaterials & Tissue engineering. The Biomedicine & Biotechnology track includes analysis and characterisation of proteins, RNA and DNA relevant for understanding disease and for drug development, but also courses that enable rational approaches to synthetic biology and industrial biotechnology. To obtain a profile from the Biomedicine and biotechnology track, it is recommended that at least three of the following compulsory elective courses are included in the degree: KBB057, KBB101, KBB111, KFK021, KKR063, KMG046, MVE360. The Food & Health track focuses on the physical, nutritional and technical aspects of food handling from raw materials to the consumer with special focus on the causal relationship between food intake and health/disease. To acquire a profile from the Food and health track, it is recommended that at least three of the following compulsory elective courses are included in the degree: KLI011, KLI021, KLI031, KLI041, KLI065. The Biomaterials & Tissue engineering track offers an interdisciplinary education which gives the student breadth in the overall subject area, yet depth in the specific topics of materials for medical devices and regenerative biomedicine (tissue engineering). To acquire a profile from the Biomaterials and tissue engineering track, it is recommended that at least three of the following compulsory elective courses are included in the degree: KPO065, TIF050, TIF125, FTF225.
