Industrial Engineering & Management program ( I-program) aims to train engineers who have knowledge, skills and attitudes to develop, manage, and use technology-based systems and processes on a business, socially and ecologically sustainable way and thereby to meet society's need for engineers who see technology in their organizational and economic context.

I programmet ingår ett kandidatarbete (examensarbete) omfattande 15 högskolepoäng. I kandidatarbetet skall studenten integrera, fördjupa och utveckla sina kunskaper och färdigheter inom ett begränsat område av det som behandlats inom tidigare genomförda kurser inom programmet. Kandidatarbetet syftar också till att ge kunskaper och färdigheter i ingenjörsmässigt och vetenskapligt arbetssätt.

Inom ramen för det valda masterprogrammet utför teknologen ett examensarbete. För detta arbete, som kan förläggas antingen vid högskolan eller till industrin, tillämpas följande regler:
  • För att få påbörja examensarbetet fordras 225 hp samt tillräckliga kunskaper i det ämne examensarbetet tillhör. Vad som är tillräckliga kunskaper bestäms av examinator
  • Upplägget av examensarbetet samt problemdefinitioner skall före igångsättande godkännas av examinator eller annan behörig handledare på institutionen oberoende av var examensarbetet initieras, planläggs och utföres.
  • Examensarbetaren skall närvara som åhörare vid minst två examensarbetesredovisningar. Utöver detta skall denne opponera på ett examensarbete.
  • Examensarbetet redovisas skriftligt och muntligt. Den skriftliga rapporten skall innehållsmässigt och stilistiskt utformas så att den kvalitetsmässigt väl motsvarar i industrin utarbetade rapporter. Rapporten skall redovisas muntligt i seminarieform.
  • Examensarbetet tillordnas 700 timmar eller 30hp för studerande som är inskrivna höstterminen 1993 eller senare.

Programme concentrations:

Besides the common and compulsory courses, the first three years also are made up by a number of engineering courses in one of several technological specializations. As a student, you will during the first year choose a technology profile that includes multiple related courses totalling 30 credits. The choice is made during the spring semester (the exact date is communicated in due time) in year one, and the first technology courses studied during the fall semester in year two. The technical specializations that can be selected are:

- Mechanical production
- Information Technology
- Chemical and Biological Engineering
- Financial Mathematics

Furthermore, there is an opportunity for students with sufficient previous university studies in the field of technology to be able to design their own individual technology profile, which in each case shall be approved by the program director. The courses shall be of sufficient scope (i.e., at least 30 credits in the technology) and deep enough (there should be a connection and a certain progression between courses). Furthermore, the total course package provides sufficient knowledge so that they considered complying with the prerequisites to any of the technology-oriented, Masters programs at Chalmers. This technology orientation is denoted as:

Title of degree:

Master of Science in Engineering. The name of the Master's programme and the main field of study are stated in the degree diploma. After the first cycle/undergraduate level, you may apply for the degree Bachelor of Science 180 credits, major subject Industrial Engineering and Management.

Other information:

Completing master program year 4-5
After the first three years of the program students can apply for a final master program. There are several different master's programs to choose from to obtain a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering & Management. Students in the program have guaranteed place on one of the following master's programs:

- Management and Economics of Innovation
- Quality and Operations Management
- Supply Chain Management

Selection to the master program will take place if there is lack of space. The selection is based on merits from the studies at bachelor level. A guaranteed place on a master's program remains three years after the student become eligible to apply for the program. For entry requirements and other information, please refer to the master program's syllabus that can be found via Chalmers website.

Studies abroad
Within the ERASMUS exchange cooperation, student can study 1 or 2 semesters abroad from grade 2. A number of students may switch their fourth year of study at Chalmers to one year of study at a university abroad. (see information on international exchange student portal).

Every second summer the program organized elective courses at University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University, comprising 15 credits. number of places in this special studyabroad program is limited to max 40. The next session is tentatively scheduled for the summer of 2015 and then after 2017.
