Course specific prerequisites

Basic courses in mechanical engineering.


The aim is to establish basic understanding regarding additive manufacturing as industrial method for manufacture of advanced parts. The course covers pre-processing, product design, process know-how, materials selection and basic aspects of manufacturing of metallic and polymeric products with respect to materials and processing technologies.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After completion of the course, the student shall:
  • be able to describe basic principles for additive manufacturing,
  • be able to describe the main processes for the additive manufacturing and their  capabilities,
  • be able to demonstrate basic skills with respect to design for additive manufacturing,
  • understand and describe the AM processes for metallic materials and some polymeric materials,
  • be able to describe technical limitations/product realisation capabilities when applying  additive manufacturing technology as manufacturing method and
  • understand and be able to analyse conditions set by materials technology, for in    particular powder-bed and blown powder/wire-based processes.    


The course addresses following topics:
  • Basic terminology, definitions and technologies in additive manufacturing
  • Preparation/design for AM, including the steps from product design to manufacturing
  • Applications for AM with respect to types of products, appropriate manufacturing series, etc
  • Basics about AM processing including characteristics of different AM technologies
  • Technology and methods applied for metals, polymers and ceramics
  • Basics of materials technology and powder technology of relevance in AM
  • Quality control of AM-parts
  • Integration of AM in manufacturing chain
  • Pre-processing of AM-parts


The course includes a lecture series that covers the main issues of the course, as defined in the course plan. A number of guest lecturers from industry (end-users of AM parts, manufacturers of AM equipment and manufacturers of AM parts) will also contribute with their knowledge. The course includes a compulsory project/group assignment, which is organised to train the participants in designing, manufacturing and evaluating an AM-part. The project is presented both by written report and oral presentation. Besides the lecture series, a number of tutoring events/exercises will be held. During these events, the students will be trained on design/process preparation, AM process knowledge, critical aspects of materials technology in AM and AM applications.


The course is defined by lecture hand outs, problem solving compendium and presented theory/guidelines for practicals, based else on the text book ""Additive Manufacturing: 3D Printing, Rapid Prototyping and Direct Digital Manufacturing", Ian Gibson, David Rosen, Brent Stucker,  ISBN: 978-1-4939-2112-6 (Print) 978-1-4939-2113-3 (Online). The course participants will in such case be informed prior to start of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

The grading will be based on the combination of the final written test and the assessment of the project/group assignment. The project will be assessed based on the quality of written report and presentation by the project group. The project and laborations are compulsory. The grading of the approved project can only upgrade the individual result from the final exam. 

The course examiner may assess individual students in other ways than what is stated above if there are special reasons for doing so, for example if a student has a decision from Chalmers on educational support due to disability.
