Basic eligibility for the Bioengineering programme.

Aim

The course is an introduction to the bioscience area and should give the student a cross-disciplinary insight into biotechnological processes from molecular biology to industrial production, as well as into biological applications within other engineering fields. The students should become familiar with retreiving and summarizing information from various resources.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

After completing the course, the student is expected to be able to
  • Describe, in general, the biotechnology focus areas at Chalmers.
  • Be able to extract biotechnological knowledge from oral presentations and scientific papers, as well as summarize and communicate it in a written report supported by scientific references.
  • Explain some of the potential roles and tasks of a MSc in Bioengineering

  • Seminar series in Biotechnology, academic writing, and sustainable development.
  • Project assignment

Organisation

  • The course contains lectures and a project assignment. Attendance is compulsory on several parts of the course, see the course PM for further details.
  • In the lecture series, people from academia and industry address different examples from the biotechnology field ranging from the molecular level to the development/production of a final product.
  • The projects are carried out in groups of 4-5 students. The aim is to analyze a chosen biotechnical problem or area, by acquiring knowledge from the lectures, databases, published papers, and the industry.
  • The project outcome shall be reported in a written communication backed up by references.
  • There is also a seminar with a few small or middle sized companies, which are invited to describe their work and the human resources they employ.
