Course specific prerequisites

BSc in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering or equivalent. BOM270 Water recourses and hydraulics, BOM345 Water engineering and the environment, BOM350 Hydrology and stormwater, ACE090 Sustainable urban water engineering, BOM075 Drinking water engineering and ACE040 Advanced wastewater engineering or equivalent.

Aim

The aim of the course is to provide students with an understanding of problem solving and modeling in the field of water systems.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

1. Understand the hydraulic, hydrodynamic and pollutant transport processes in natural and constructed water systems
2. Distinguish between different models, considering both simple and advanced models
3. Be able to select and use an appropriate model for a given analysis to assess the quantity and quality of water, including model calibration, validation and uncertainty
4. Evaluate appropriate input values for the model parameters of the models considered, and to appreciate the sensitivity of the simulation results to the selected parameter values;
5. Write a scientific paper
6. Carry out a literature review
7. Assess and give constructive feedback to other projects group's work by
   a. Critically evaluate used methods with consideration to scientific trustworthiness
   b. Interpret and assess the quality of the results
   c. Evaluate whether research has been carried out in a trustworthy and defensible manner

Content

Water quality and quantity modelling: introduction to modelling, types of models, model components, examples, and in-class exercise

Organisation

Lectures and seminars covering central topics in the course. Exercises to illustrate how various models can be used to model water systems. Carry out a group project.
You are expected to
- Organise, plan and manage the project work load according to the tasks and the members of the group
- Collaborate professionally according to the project group's needs of structured management and task distribution

Examination including compulsory elements

Written individual assignment (graded). Computer exercises (P/F). Project work is reported in a written scientific paper (graded). Perform a clear oral presentation of the project result that is well-suited to its intended audience. Assess and give constructive feedback to other projects group's work and scientific paper.
