Eligibility:

In order to be eligible for a first cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme(s) that has the course included in the study programme.

Course specific prerequisites

In order to secure a sufficient level of prior knowledge, students must have attained at least 97,5 hec from courses in the first three years of their degree programmes to commence their bachelor's thesis work. Only credits registered in LADOK after the exam period 1 in study year 3 will be taken into consideration.

Aim

In the bachelor thesis project, the student will integrate, extend and develop knowledge and skills and knowledge of a smaller, specialized part of the field of the programme. The bachelor thesis also aims to develop skills in application of engineering problem solving and research methods.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Formulate and delimit a complex problem
  • Plan a project in order to solve a complex problem with given resources and time constraints
  • Search for, compile and assess relevant scientific literature and other background information
  • Integrate and develop knowledge relevant for the formulated problem
  • Document the work process of a complex project in a project journal
  • Communicate the results of a project in written and oral form the, including to evaluate how the results correspond to the project goals
  • Critically evaluate another project with respect to problem, approach and results

Content

The main part of the bachelor thesis is a project. The aim of the project is to integrate, deepen and develop the knowledge and skills of the student within a smaller, specific area of the curriculum. The student chooses the specialization topic by selecting a project from a provided list. The teaching activities in the course focus on "generic" skills that are applied in the project work. Particular emphasis is given to written and oral communications.

Organisation

The bachelor thesis is conducted mainly as a project. The thesis project group size is 3-6 people. Teaching in form of lectures, workshops and tutoring is provided with regards to the project's specialization topic, and with regards to generic skills. Planning, interim and final reports are to be handed in at determined dates. Project supervisors provide feedback on the reports.

Literature

Examination

The written thesis report should follow established standards for scientific and technical reports. The report may consist of an independently authored report, or an identifiable part of a joint report. The thesis project is presented and defended orally. In addition, the student should also critically examine and discuss another group's thesis work, and serve as opponent to another group. For the grading, emphasis is placed the quality of the written report, the project journal, and the oral presentation and discussion.
