This education programme leads to short course diplomas (Swedish class VII) in both navigation and marine engineering. The one year education programme aims at educating marine officers with a broad range of theoretical skills, well prepared for working within the national, coastal shipping industry on smaller vessels. After completion of the course with short course diplomas class VII in navigation and marine engineering, the appropriate certificates according to national and international legislation, and with the required, qualifying, time at sea, the student should be able to work as ship's officer (on board ships with a dead weight <500) and="" engine="" officers="" (at="" ships="" with="" a="" machine="" power="" of="" 750-3000="">

The education programme shall follow all requirements of the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) and the international convention Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW).

Knowledge and understanding

After completion of the course, the student should be able to...
- Describe a ship's general construction and structural elements
- Describe and explain factors affecting vessel stability
- Describe tidal emergence and calculate its height and time
- Use and explain ortlinjeteori in navigation
- Explaining how ship equipment and a ship's electrical system works and is structured
- Describe the basics of radio navigation
- Navigationally plan and execute a trip and be responsible for navigation
- Safely handle dangerous goods
- Define the units in the SI system
- Be able to use English in speech and writing, as well as and marine standard phrases
- Explain concepts in direct current to learn and perform basic calculations
- Identify concepts in single-phase and three-phase alternating current, as well as performing basic calculations
- Apply basic measurement techniques, and use the most common measuring instruments in electrical engineering
- Explain basic concepts and areas of control technology
- Summarize the shipping industry's main impacts on marine ecosystems, air quality and global climate

Skills and abilities

After completion of the course, the student should be able to...
- Conduct a bridge watch in a safe way
- Navigate in all situations with the presentation of good seamanship and in accordance with national and international maritime regulations
- Plan trips with regard to maritime safety
- Prevent, control and fight fires on board
- Systematically plan the vessel's performance and anticipate the movements of the ship
- Systematically plan for maintenance of a ship's propulsion systems and deck machinery systems
- Systematically plan and carry out commissioning of ship machinery
- Use an oil logbook
- Apply safety manuals for ships
- Compare and evaluate shipyard specifications

Judgement and approach

After completion of the course, the student should be able to...
- Make appropriate risk assessments in a given situation, including time-pressured situations with limited information available,
- Discuss opportunities to reduce the environmental impact of shipping
