An applicant to a programme or course with English as language of instruction must prove a sufficient level of English language proficiency. The requirement is the Swedish upper secondary school English course 6 or B, or equivalent. Undergraduate profile:

Major in Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Environmental Engineering or the equivalent.



Mathematics (at least 22,5 cr.) and 20 cr. within the following areas: Geology, Geotechnics, Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Water and Wastewater Engineering, Fluid Mechanics or Environmental Engineering
Preferable course experience: Linear Algebra, Multivariable Analysis and Statistics

General organization:


The master's program aims at meeting the societal need for qualified competence in planning, design, construction and maintenance of infrastructure systems in soil and water, which will contribute to long-term sustainable development. The program promotes the personal development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that are needed to start working as a professional engineer in the field of infrastructure and environmental engineering, including development of roads, traffic planning, foundation of structures and buildings, tunnels, remediation of contaminated sites, protection of soil and water resources, design of drinking water and wastewater treatment plants and distribution systems. All phases of the engineering process should be exemplified concerning planning, design, construction, operation, assessment and rehabilitation, and different engineering roles relevant for the field should be demonstrated. Integration of professional experience in education is an important part of the program and the student should be well prepared for entering the market in a professional role. The program should fulfil the market need for qualified competence: technical specialists and system generalists but also researchers and academic teachers. An important task is to be responsible for the interface between urban development and the environment.


Learning outcome:

To prepare students for a long lasting professional career, the programme promotes personal development of (as defined by the CDIO system):

1. Technical knowledge and reasoning means that one

- Has a good theoretical grasp of the mechanical and physico-chemical properties of ground, soil and water for analysis of their interaction with structures and environment.

- Can investigate and analyse the presence and characteristics of ground, soil and water relevant to the infrastructure system.

- Understands basically the concept of sustainable development, and know how to apply and use this knowledge in a professional manner to be able to contribute to a global sustainability.

2. Personal and professional skills and attributes mean that one

- Can solve engineering problems professionally, including:

- Conceptual modelling.

- Analysis with respect to uncertainty.

- Finding solutions and, information for decisions.

- Can analyse the function of infrastructure systems theoretically and in practice.

- Can design the infrastructure systems needed by society for water and transport.

- Can analyse the effects of the infrastructure on people and the environment.

- Can plan and design optimal solutions based on requirements of function, sustainability or environment, and economic reality.

Degree of Master of Science in Engineering



The program comprises a compulsory part, Overview and Basics, and a set of semi-compulsory courses, Tools, Depth and Synthesis, followed by a Master's thesis work which provides concluding specialization and research experience. The compulsory first term (30 ECTS credit units) provides a foundation in the form of model thinking and design, management of water resources as well as a background in urban development, such as drinking water production and distribution and engineering geology. In the Tools, Depth and Synthesis module (60 ECTS credit units), the students can specialize in road and traffic, ground and construction or water and environmental engineering. The students have to follow courses of at least 30 ECTS from the semi-compulsory courses. The remaining 30 ECTS can be selected from the program or from elsewhere (other programs at Chalmers or at other universities in Sweden or abroad). The Master's thesis includes advanced work in one part of the field covered by the program.
