English proficiency:

An applicant to a programme or course with English as language of instruction must prove a sufficient level of English language proficiency. The requirement is the Swedish upper secondary school English course 6 or B, or equivalent. Undergraduate profile:

Major in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Engineering Physics or Engineering Mathematics.

 

Prerequisities:

Mathematics (at least 30 cr.) (including Linear algebra, Multivariable analysis, Mathematical statistics and Numerical analysis), Mechanics, Fluid mechanics and Strength of materials or Solid mechanics.

Aim:

The aim of the programme in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is to offer an internationally attractive and competitive education within planning, design and analysis of large structures from strength, hydrodynamic and systems engineering point of view. The focus during the programme will be on ships and offshore structures, but the aim is also to make the education attractive for students with a general interest in strength analysis, hydrodynamic analysis and systems engineering. The aim of the Masters programme in Naval Architecture and Ocean engineering is also to extend the knowledge and understanding associated with a Bachelors degree. The education provides an opportunity for originality in developing and/or applying ideas, often within a research context. Another aim of the programme is to give insight to the scientific foundation and proven experience in Naval Architecture as well as insight to current research and development work.

 

Learning outcome:

The proposed programme in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering aims to prepare the student for independent work as a Naval Architect on a level that follows the degree requirements for the master level according to the Dublin descriptors and the Swedish Degree Ordinance for the Civilingenjör degree.

1. Demonstrate a broad knowledge within Naval Architecture including mathematics and science
2. Demonstrate a significantly deepened knowledge within hydrodynamics, ship structures and systems engineering
3. Design hulls with respect to hydrodynamic requirements
4. Use modern computer software in all stages of the design process
5. Demonstrate the ability to plan and design a complex product like a commercial ship

7. Propose new concepts and designs to meet transport needs and limitations for ships

Thesis:

The master's thesis work (30 credits) should deal with a clearly defined topic within a restricted areas of what has been previously studied at courses within the Master programme. It can be carried out at Chalmers, in industry, in research institute or at other universities. Although, the examiner has always to be a teacher from Chalmers. To start the thesis work the student must have passed 45 credits of courses from the programme. Students pursuing the five-year Master of Science in Engineering training must have passed at least 225 credits before beginning work on a thesis.

There is a possibility to carry out an extended master's thesis project (60 credits) with a clear research orientation. There will only be a limited number of such theses available (applied for in competition with your fellow students), and the requirements of the students are higher than for a normal thesis. A goal of a 60 credit thesis is to produce research results good enough to be presented at international conferences or journals. Other information:
 

The Masters programme in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is directed towards planning and design of ships and offshore structures. The focus is on strength analysis of the ship structure, analysis of the hydrodynamic performance and on systems engineering. The compulsory courses Ship geometry and hydrostatics, Marine Transport Systems, Ship resistance and computational hydrodynamics, Marine Structural Engineering , Marine Propulsion Systems and Wave Loads and Seakeeping are selected to give a basic knowledge in Naval Architecture corresponding to the general learning outcomes on knowledge and understanding.

The course Reliability Analysis of Marine Structures is offered as an elective course by the department of Mechanics and Maritime Science. Elective courses can also be selected from other master's programmes like Applied mechanics, Automotive Engineering, Production Engineering, Engineering Materials, Sustainable Energy Systems, Technology, Society and the Environment and Product Development.

A very important part of the programme in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering is the Marine design project. The purpose is to participate in a problem oriented ship, offshore or yacht design project. Student teams will be assigned real design problems, guided by professional engineers from industry and faculty members from Chalmers. The initial design process prior to an order of a new ship or yacht is covered during the project following the demands of the customer. In addition to the learning outcomes under knowledge and understanding, the design project will address the learning outcomes under skills and abilities and formulation of judgements and attitudes. In particular teamwork and communication will be trained.

The programme consists of a core of compulsory courses during the first year, and a set of elective courses during the first and second year. An important compulsory part during the second year is the Marine design project where the students actively participate in a real design project.
