Aim:

The objective of the programme is to meet the needs of chemical engineering expertise in order to develop suitable and useful technical solutions for the society. A graduated student has both theoretical knowledge and experimental skills in chemistry and chemical engineering fitted for chemical industry, government, and other businesses where engineering competence is required. The programme will provide the student with strategies to formulate, implement and evaluate projects and presenting the obtained results orally and in writing. The student is trained in critical thinking concerning environmental problems, the link between technology/man/society, as well a holistic view of chemical products.

 

Learning outcome:

The programme will on a scientific basis provide the student with opportunities for engineering work in the fields of chemistry and chemical engineering.

The student should acquire

  • good knowledge of chemistry, chemical engineering and mathematics.
  • good knowledge of topics relevant to chemical engineering such as industrial management, environmental science and project organization.
  • ability to plan for laboratory-scale and larger-scale, and to implement and evaluate experimental procedures and projects.
  • ability to report and present results orally and in writing in English and Swedish.
  • good skills in laboratory work.
  • identify and formulate technical problems and to apply the acquired knowledge in solving these.
  • collect, analyze and evaluate information.
  • understand the connections between technology, environment and economy.
  • present results for both trained technicians and the general public.
  • good knowledge of the professional role, the labor market and possible career paths, through collaboration with companies and organizations.

This means that the chemical engineer is able to work within the field of

  • product and process development
  • production and process technology

and in industries such as

  • pharmaceutical, biotechnology and food
  • pulp and paper
  • plastics and rubber, textile
  • chemical and petroleum

Thesis:

The final part of  the programme involves a thesis project at 15 credits (HT10 16,5 credits).

Bachelor of Science in Engineering. The main field of study, Chemical Engineering, is stated in the degree certificate.

Content and organization:
The curriculum extends over three years and comprises 180 credits.

The teaching is mainly organized in the form of lectures, tutorials, projects, and laboratory work. The laboratory work has a central role and the student is continuously trained in practical work to develop laboratory skills and also to obtain a deeper theoretical understanding of chemistry and chemical engineering. The programme consists of activities that encourage to take initiative, co-operate within a group, and to take responsibility. A central activity is student-led laboratory work that is introduced early during the programme. Students are divided into groups and a student is appointed to be the tutor of a project group. This leadership then rotates within the group during a course.

The most common examination form is written exam. For most courses the grades 3, 4, 5, and U are used.  In some courses, only the grade pass, G, is given.

Study materials:
The literature is written in English and/or Swedish.

Advancement regulations:
In order to commence the second year, 37,5 cr. are demanded. In order to commence the third year, a total of 82,5 cr. is demanded, of which at least 37,5 cr. shall be from the second year.

Students who do not meet the above requirements shall contact the student guidance counsellor of the programme, in order to make an individual study plan.

Further studies:
A graduated student may continue to study at some specified Chalmers master's programmes, after fulfilling the admission requirements for the programme.
