Mathematics (at least 30 cr.) Chalmers Master's programme in Production Engineering (MPPEN) programme aims at conveying the knowledge, judgment and skills required to design and improve manufacturing processes and high-performing sustainable production systems. This includes leading development projects as well as managing such systems in full operation.

The professional area for a production engineer goes across sectors - from automotive, medicine and health care industry to food production. With a broad production engineering knowledge base, the programme gives a wide spectrum of career opportunities including advancement as specialists in the areas of Production Systems, Manufacturing Processes, and Production Management.

The programme includes six compulsory courses and a mandatory Master's thesis project. In addition, the programme architecture enables students to select courses across three main occupational tracks:
1. Production Systems Engineering - prepares for taking an active role in developing complex production systems. The work tasks include planning for new or updated industrial facilities, e.g. with purchasing of automation technology and design of efficient production flows. Furthermore, the profile track emphasizes the need for safe and profitable involvement of human resources. Skills in building virtual models of products, machines, cells, and production lines are central as a sustainable way of working for future engineers.
2. Manufacturing Process Engineering - contains the work tasks to select suitable processes, tools and machines for value adding manufacturing operations in the physical materials. Computer-based tools are frequently used as virtual aids for preparing manufacturing processes such as forming, cutting, casting, and joining as well as planning the manufacturing of polymer and composite materials.
3. Production Management Engineering - focuses on the management of resources and activities, typically on a factory and/or enterprise level. Important aspects are: to align the production systems design to the strategy of the company, to initiate and manage design and change initiatives in production, to plan and control the effective use of materials and production units to meet customer demands, and to ensure that modern production technologies and philosophies are efficiently implemented.

Reflecting the program idea the master's programme in Production Engineering include four parts:
1. Compulsory core courses in production Engineering, 45 credits.
2. Semi-compulsory courses arranged in three occupational alignments. The students select 2 of 8 courses - 15 credits in total. It is allowed to select courses from different alignments.
3. Elective courses, 30 credits (in case of 30 credits master thesis project).
4. Master thesis project (30 or 60 credits).

Manufacturing is of fundamental importance for welfare in society and for human well-being. Throughout history, the industrial product realization process has contributed to great progress. But today the seamy side of the industrial society is becoming ever more apparent. We have become aware of how problematic it is to equate human progress with material growth. The waste of resources is becoming increasingly evident and we are witnessing global climate change induced by human production. This emphasizes the need for innovations in the product realization process; production engineers must learn a way of working according to more holistic and sustainable perspectives.


Learning outcome:

Production development in industry is generally performed by multi-disciplinary teams within organizations, and information technology (IT) tools are generally used for decision support. Therefore, based on the knowledge of underlying sciences, core engineering knowledge, and advanced engineering knowledge in the area of Production, the MPPEN programme aims to develop the students' team and networking skills and their ability to utilize IT support tools to increase their ability for analysis and communication of results. After having completed the programme, the students should have gained experience of and be able to:

Knowledge and understanding
- Identify and formulate clear problems, both in terms of finding improvement potential for a given production system and detecting generic knowledge gaps in the area of production engineering.
- Describe the state of the art in selected fields of production engineering and apply considerably deepened domain knowledge in design, control, and improvement of production systems.
- Use relevant scientific and engineering methods in development of production systems.

Abilities and skills
- Apply sustainability thinking in the development and operation of profitable, eco-friendly, safe, and inspiring production systems.
- Apply specialist and leadership skills in multi-disciplinary teams to analyze, evaluate, and develop technical solutions and complex production systems.
- Describe, select and apply different engineering methods and tools for solving familiar and emerging problems.
- Solve open problems by applying and integrating knowledge from different areas in the production domain, also with limited access to data and information.
- Effectively communicate (orally and in written text) intentions, methods, results, arguments, and judgments for national and international stakeholders.
- Work independently in the area of production research and development or in similar high-level areas.

The master's thesis work (30 credits) should deal with a clearly defined topic within a areas covered by courses in the Master programme. It can be carried out at Chalmers, in industry, in research institute or at other universities. To start the thesis work the student must have passed 45 credits of courses from the programme. Students pursuing the five-year Master of Science in Engineering training must have passed at least 225 credits before beginning work on a thesis.

There is a possibility to carry out an extended master's thesis project (60 credits) with a clear research orientation. There will only be a limited number of such theses available (applied for in competition with your fellow students), and the requirements of the students are higher than for a normal thesis. A goal of a 60 credit thesis is to produce research results good enough to be presented at international conferences or journals. The Master programme in Production Engineering offers an education for future industrial experts. There is great need for production engineering skill in Sweden and internationally. Global market competition has again made production engineering expertise into a core asset. Future production engineers will have a wide spectrum of choices within a company.

Chalmers University of Technology is a leading university in the production engineering area, in terms of research as well as education, and MPPEN is a central part of Chalmers' Production Area of Advance. Within several courses of MPPEN, there is a close cooperation with industry; see for example the course called "Industry Project".
