Aim:

The purpose of the program is to provide the students with a solid training in problem solving. The students will learn to use powerful mathematical tools,which means that problems from widely different disciplines can be analyzed. This means that he student will in some sense become a generalist. The program also aims at teaching the students to acquire skills in mathematical and statistical modeling and simulation. In his/her professional life, the student should be able to work in areas such as the pharmaceutical industry, IT, finance and insurance. He/she should also be able to contribute with computational analysis in electromagnetism, fluid dynamics, optimization and strength of materials. The program in Applied Mathematics of course also provides an excellent basis for graduate studies and an academic career in several different disciplines.

 

Learning outcome:

The student should have a broad competence in mathematical sciences and a deepened competence in computational science, mathematical statistics and optimization and have the ability to model complex phenomena from engineering and science. The student should also have the ability to choose and use the proper tools for different problems, show the ability, orally and in written form, present and discuss mathematical models and conclusions, to develop mathematical software in tools for information technology and to be able to make proper judgments that take into account the relevant scientific, social and sustainability aspects.

Title of degree:

Master of Science in Engineering. (300 credits). The name of the Master's programme and the main field of study, Mathematics, are stated in the degree certificate. After the first cycle/undergraduate level, you may apply for the degree Bachelor of Science 180 credits, major subject Mathematics.

Advancement regulations
In order to commence the second year, 37,5 cr. are demanded. In order to commence the third year, a total of 82,5 cr. is demanded, of which at least 37,5 cr. shall be from the second year. At least 150 cr. must be attained in order to commence a master's programme. Students who do not meet the above requirements shall contact the student guidance counsellor of the programme, in order to make an individual study plan.

Compulsory requirements
For a bachelor's degree in Mathematics, at least 15 ECTS of the elective courses must be chosen from another area than mathematics, i.e. the course code must not start with MVE, TMA or TMS. For the master's degree in engineering, it is required to have taken at least one of TMA947 Nonlinear Optimization or MVE165 Linear and integer optimization with applications. One must also have taken at least one of TMA372 Partial differential equations or TMA690 Partial differential equations.

Bachelor project
The bachelor project aims at giving the student an engineering and scientific approach. This includes information seeking as well as planning, management and reporting of a project. The project work also aims to integrate, deepen and develop the knowledge and skills of the student within a limited area of what has been covered by earlier courses at the program. The student decides what area to focus on by choosing from a list of project suggestions.

Master's thesis
The master thesis work is done within the domain of the chosen master program. It provides a deeper understanding of a topic from that domain.
