An applicant to a programme or course with English as language of instruction must prove a sufficient level of English language proficiency. The requirement is the Swedish upper secondary school English course 6 or B, or equivalent. Undergraduate profile:

Major in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics or Engineering Mathematics

 

Prerequisities:

Prerequisites: Mathematics 30 cr. (including Linear algebra, Multivariable calculus, Fourier analysis) and Electromagnetic field theory
Preferable course experience: High frequency electromagnetic waves

Aim:

The aim of this program is to provide a master education for a future career in engineering branches that rely heavily on electromagnetic waves, e.g. telecommunication, automotive electronics, space engineering, medical applications of microwaves and photonics, remote sensing, solid state lighting, environmental monitoring, navigation, and radio astronomy. The program is designed to prepare for a professional career in the industry, at a university, or a research institute. This is reached through advanced studies of wireless and optical communication components and systems, RF and microwave engineering, photonics (phenomena and applications utilizing photons), and space science and techniques. Wireless, Photonics and Space Engineering with its many applications is a large industry in both Sweden and worldwide.

 

Learning outcome:

Knowledge and understanding
For a master's degree the student should show:

·    broad knowledge and understanding in wireless, photonics and space engineering, substantially deeper knowledge within chosen topics of the field, and insight into current research and development.
·    deep knowledge of methods for generating, modulating, detecting, and guiding electromagnetic waves.
·    deep knowledge of methods to analyze and design microwave and photonics systems, including wireless, fibre optical, and space communication systems.
·    deep knowledge in measurement methods for microwave, terahertz and optical frequencies.

Skills and abilities
For a master's degree the student should show the skills and ability to:

·    plan and with adequate methods analyse and design hardware for wireless, photonic and space systems within given constraints.
·    create, analyze and critically evaluate different technical solutions exploiting electromagnetic waves.
·    with a comprehensive approach critically, independently, and creatively identify, formulate and handle complex problems in wireless, photonics and space engineering.
·    contribute to research and development in wireless, photonics or space engineering.
·    in written and spoken English clearly present and discuss her/his findings, as well as the knowledge and arguments that form the basis for these findings.
·    work and collaborate in teams with diverse backgrounds.
·    critically and systematically integrate components in systems.
·    model, simulate, predict, and evaluate the performance of microwave and photonic components, even with limited information.

Judgement and approach
For a master's degree the student should show:

·    the ability to make technical judgements based on relevant scientific, social, and ethical aspects, as well as consciousness of the ethical aspects of research and development work.
·    the ability to identify her/his need for further knowledge and continuously developing her/his knowledge.

 

Extent: 120.0 c

 

Thesis:

A master's thesis project (30 credits) concludes the studies. The student spends about 20 weeks on a project, working either for a university or an industrial R&D department. The project results in a written thesis, which is orally presented as well. To start the thesis work the student must have passed 45 credits of courses from the programme. Students pursuing the five-year Master of Science in Engineering training must have passed at least 225 credits before beginning work on a thesis.

There is a possibility to carry out an extended master's thesis project (60 credits) with a clear research orientation. There will only be a limited number of such theses available (applied for in competition with your fellow students), and the requirements of the students are higher than for a normal thesis. A goal of a 60 credit thesis is to produce research results good enough to be presented at international conferences or journals. The master's thesis should be carried out in one of the following areas: earth and space sciences, solid state electronics, communication systems, microwave electronics, wireless communication, terahertz technology, antenna design and characterization, optical communication, photonics, optical or microwave sensor technology, radar systems, radioastronomical techniques, remote sensing or satellite positioning.
