An applicant to a programme or course with English as language of instruction must prove a sufficient level of English language proficiency. The requirement is the Swedish upper secondary school English course 6 or B, or equivalent. Transport phenomena, Engineering thermodynamics, Process control engineering or Chemical reaction engineering and Mathematics (including Linear algebra, Multivariable analysis, Differential equations).

The Innovative and Sustainable Chemical Engineering masters program aims to educate and train Masters of Engineering skilled in problem solving, building and analyzing models, within the area of Innovative and Sustainable Chemical Engineering (Innovativ och hållbar kemiteknik). The program will provide the research community, society and the industrial sector with highly educated chemical engineers that meet the highest international standards. They will be experts in innovative and sustainable chemical engineering, not only familiar with existing engineering skills but also involved in the development of emerging fields.


Learning outcome:

After the program the student will have:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of chemical engineering subjects that are central to the production of materials and energy.

  • The ability to design and evaluate sustainable and innovative processes and systems.

  • The ability to plan, perform and evaluate experiments at the lab, on pilot and plant scale.

  • Competence in performing and critically analysing advanced technical modeling and simulations of chemical phenomena and processes.

Students will be trained to:

  • Identify and formulate problems and to apply knowledge to the problem-solving process.

  • Collect, interpret, critically examine, analyse and evaluate technical information.

  • Understand and analyse the connections between society, technology, the environment and economics.

  • Present results and information both in writing and verbally.

  • Have a "fearless" attitude and embrace new challenges.

  • Cultivate professional attributes, such as a willingness to make qualified estimations and assumptions and a readiness to face open-ended problems and uncertain data.

The final part of the program involves a thesis project which can be 30 or 60 credits. It can be performed at Chalmers, other international universities or in industry. The master's research project should be related to the student's specialist field, defined by her/his choice of master's program.

Program Structure

Students are required to complete a minimum of 8 of the 12 compulsory-elective courses. These courses form the core of the program and are selected to give advanced knowledge in chemical engineering as well as an insightful base in global sustainability that is the constraint for all engineering work. They cover the fundamentals of sustainable technology, production of renewable raw materials and efficient use of energy. Design and simulation of equipment and processes are also covered in the compulsory courses.

Students seeking to profile their education in a selected field are recommended to select one of the three specializations within the program. These so called profile tracks include Modeling and Design, Pulp and Paper and Sustainable Development. Students can also combine courses according to their own interest. In most courses, the students will work in groups with open ended complex real life problems i.e. solutions must be found to problems with incomplete and uncertain data. Students will have opportunities to try alternative solutions and evaluate their ideas in comparison with existing industrial solutions. Within courses, adjunct professors and invited guest lecturers from industry regularly present their view on product and process development.
