Aim

The course will give an introduction to advanced reactor modeling with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation program. The goal of the course is to give a comprehensive understanding of the underlying physical and chemical phenomena in various chemical processes that are necessary for any type of process modeling and development. The focus will be on how fluid dynamics, mass and heat transport interact with chemical reactions in single and multiphase reactions. Also, special emphasis will be placed on environmentally sustainable and/or processes intended for pollution abatement as examples.

Content

An introduction to CFD concerning what CFD can be used for and what are its limitations. Modeling of single and multiphase reactions will start with a review of the types of traditional chemical engineering models that are available and advance to look at what new models have been developed and how they can be used together with CFD. Primarily the modeling of multiphase flow and transport over phase boundaries will be discussed. Applications will mainly concern catalytic reactions with porous catalysts and gas-liquid reactions.

The goal of the simulation projects is to train students in problem formulation and solution and the use of a CFD program to solve larger design tasks. A written report from each project must contain a critical discussion of the models used in the simulation and an estimate of the reliability of the simulation results.

Examination

A passing grade requires passing of a minor wittern examination half way through the course and satisfactory completion of the project reports. Good or very good grades on the project reports and a short oral examination are required to earn a higher grade.
