Aim

The aim is to establish basic understanding regarding additive manufacturing (AM) as the industrial method for prototyping and manufacture of advanced parts. The course provides an overview of techniques for metal, polymer/composite and ceramic with their limitations and possibilities. International definitions are introduced and terminology is explained. The course covers pre-processing, components design for AM, process know-how, materials selection and basic aspects of manufacturing of metallic and polymeric products with respect to materials and processing technologies. Certain aspects of additive manufacturing of ceramics are also covered.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • describe basic principles for metal additive manufacturing (AM)
  • describe the main technologies of additive manufacturing, their capabilities and limitations
  • demonstrate basic skills with respect to design for additive manufacturing
  • demonstrate skills regarding product design from product idea via manufacture to evaluation of final product
  • describe and give examples of why finishing machining of component would be necessary
  • describe methods for post-AM processing
  • demonstrate skills regarding process selection and understanding of product design, materials selection and production volume for different AM-technologies

Content

The course consists of a number of lectures / seminars presenting various new areas. A project assignment is carried out with focus on selection, design and additive manufacturing of components. The project assignment includes critical evaluation of the different metal additive manufacturing technologies and available materials with focus on suitability of the selected method

Organisation

The course is organised via distance learning on half speed. Lectures are provided via Zoom/Skype/Microsoft Teams and introduction to software for pre-processing of additive manufacturing like Simplify 3D och Magics is included. The software will be reachable for the project work by external connection. The course is divided into three parts:

Week 25 to week 26: lectures, introduction
Week 27 to week 29: individual work and group work
Week 30 to week 34: lectures, group work, presentation of group work, examination

Lecture notes (pdf) will published on course web and define the course contents.
Reference course book is: Additive Manufacturing Technologies by Ian Gibson, seehttp://chalmers.summon.serialssolutions.com/en/search?ho=t&q=gibson%20additive#!/search?ho=t&l=en&q=gibson%20additive. The book by Gibson can be bought as paper-back at reasonable cost at Chalmers or from different sources. Problem solving examples are defined separately and not necessarily taken from reference course book. Lecture notes (Powerpoint presentations) will published on course web and constitute the main source for the course. The software programmes for AM pre-processing Simplify 3D (for polymer printing) and Magics (for powder-bed based AM) are installed at Chalmers for project work.
