Course specific prerequisites

The courses MVE575 Calculus, MVE570 Linear algebra and differential equations and LMT207 Mechanics, or equivalent knowledge.

Aim

The aim of the course is that the students are to attain knowledge of the basic principles and concepts of strength of materials, which is required for calculations of stresses and deformations in different mechanical components.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Describe the basic concepts and laws of strength of materials. Apply these laws and concepts in solving problems.
  • analyze bending of beams and making use of the beam equation.
  • describe the concept of buckling and stability.

Content

The course covers the basic topics of strength of materials:
  • Tension and compression.
  • Shear and torsion.
  • Bending of beams.
  • Elastic stability.

The course includes 21 lectures and 14 tutorials.
