Bachelor degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, course in Transportation engineering and traffic analysis or eqvivalent


The goal of this advanced course is to cover the topics that are rarely included in the traditional transportation curriculum but sought after in transportation industry. The course content will vary each year to keep up with the pace of rapid development of transportation technologies.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- Design urban transit systems with emphasis on line and station planning, resolving accessibility issues, timetabling and scheduling, fleet planning and transit fare strategies
- Implement road safety analyses, with the emphasis on cross sectional and before-and-after empirical studies, crash reconstruction case studies, econometric model applications, and system-wide safety management strategies
- Design sustainable transportation with the emphasis on non-motorized modes of transportation, traffic emissions modeling and estimations, environmental impact studies, and the role of sustainability in developed and developing world
- Design intelligent transportation systems with the emphasis on performance management strategies for planned and unplanned events, including connected infrastructure, autonomous vehicles, urban freight solutions, smart parking technologies, and other applications of innovative technologies in transportation field
- Make assessments regarding relevant ethical aspects as well as raise awareness of ethical aspects of research and development within the field of transportation


Following the compulsory course in Transportation Engineering, the advanced course will also be addressing the issues on all three levels: planning, operations and design, but with a more specific and detailed approach to topics of relevance for contemporary transportation engineers. On the planning level, the students will learn about urban transit systems typology and operational characteristics. On the operations level, the students will acquire more in-depth knowledge on smart transportation applications. Related to roadway design, the students will particularly focus on traffic safety from the civil engineering perspective. In each stage of the course, the students will learn about relevant software tools for planning, design, data mining and analysis.


Course will be organized mainly around lectures and computer-based lab work. The course assignments will be highly focused on project-based deliverables. 

Examination including compulsory elements

Course examination consist of in-class labs and team-based project deliverables which will require presentation and written report deliverables.
