Course specific prerequisites

The course builds on the previous courses on mechanics and strength of materials. The course is a necessary basis for the course Material and manufacturing technology as well as advanced courses in materials engineering, design and processing technology.


Based on a product or component, to analyze polymeric and metallic engineering materials with respect to the performance, and how materials and processes can be used to optimize the materials function in the product or component.

To illustrate and explain polymeric, metallic and ceramic materials, special mechanical and physical properties from molecular structure and the structure and orientation on general guidelines for applications of the materials.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

a) Describe the structure of most used engineering materials, and relate the structure to the physical properties. Know the most common polymeric and metallic materials and describe their general properties.
b) Explain how processing and heat treatment is used to modify the properties of the materials, and to describe the mechanisms behind.
c) Explain how environmental factors influence the properties of the materials, and point out limitations and possibilities for the use of the materials.
d) Use methods for dimensioning with respect to strength, deformation, fracture and fatigue for polymeric materials.


The course has a design driven approach, meaning that focus is on the functions of the materials in a product. From the demands on the product are demands on the material properties are derived and material solutions found. The course shall demonstrate the width of different polymer and metallic materials, important applications, and material production.
The course includes the following areas:
  • The process of design and materials selection
  • Properties of metals, with focus on mechanical properties
  • Structure of metallic materials: atomic, crystal, and micro structure
  • Deformation and hardening mechanisms in metals
  • How properties are modified with process and heat treatment
  • Thermal properties, glass transition for polymers
  • Mechanical properties and visco-elasticity for polymers
  • Rubbers and rubber elasticity
  • Additions in polymers
  • Recycling
  • Materials knowledge


    The course consist of 21 lectures, 14 exercises, and three laborations.
