Course specific prerequisites

The courses LMA401/MVE575 Calculus, MVE580/MVE570 Linear algebra and differential equations, LMT202/LMT207 Mechanics, TME255/LMU113 Strength of materials and LMU421 Computer aided design, or equivalent knowledge.


The aim of the course is to be able to analyze and dimension a selection of machine elements of central importance in mechanical engineering. The level of understanding should be such that the students in their profession as engineers should be able to participate in discussions regarding selection of components, design in parts and subsystems in order to achieve required functionality and performance. The subject is of central importance for mechanical engineers because of the wide multitude of machine elements in a lot of different areas (from kitchen devices to vehicles).

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • use the relationship between the applied torque on the screw shell / nut and the resulting axial force in the joint.
  • use a force - displacement diagram to calculate the resulting screw and clamping forces for externally applied loads.
  • compute how setting affects bolted joints.
  • describe the function of the coil spring, tapered coil spring, coil spring, torsion rod, roller belt spring, leaf spring and plate spring.
  • use and design for different types of spring characteristics.
  • design torsional springs with respect to stresses at axial load.
  • describe local and average spring constants for a spring with non-linear characteristics.
  • describe the difference between shrinkage and pressure assemblies (joints).
  • explain the meaning of diametrical interference in shrinkage and pressure assemblies.
  • compute and compensate for the effects of the surface roughness on the interference in shrink fit assemblies
  • design shrink fit and pressure assemblies with respect to risk for sliding and too high stresses (yielding or failure)
  • compute the maximum transferable load for clamped joints.
  • explain the advantages and disadvantages of splines joints relative to wedge joints.
  • describe different types of pins.
  • design a conventional conical joint.


The emphasis is placed on the function and the methodology of the dimensioning of some types of (often used) machine elements. Springs, screw fastenings and bearings are examples of elements which will be treated in the course.


The course includes besides integrated lectures and solving sessions also major assignments and labs.
