Eligibility:


In order to be eligible for a second cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme that owns the course. (If the second cycle course is owned by a first cycle programme, second cycle entry requirements apply.)
Exemption from the eligibility requirement: Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling these requirements.

Course specific prerequisites

While not being a formal prerequisite, this course is designed under the assumption that participating students hold a major in software engineering, information technology, or computer science.

Aim

The course aims to impart a declarative knowledge as well as a reflective understanding of project work, i.e. the organisation leadership and control of project activity, in order to prepare the student for participating in and improving the student’s ability to improve the performance of project-related work.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

-    Describe basic project management concepts and tools
-    Apply project management theories to analyze the specific characteristics of industrial projects and based on this suggest appropriate ways to manage the projects
-    Frame, analyze and solve managerial problems in project settings using appropriate literature
-    Use literature to critically evaluate project management models
-    Structure and organize projects of a not too complicated nature

Content

The course is about managing projects. This means that the course contains general knowledge on project management and reflects such knowledge in contingences occurring when dealing with projects in technology-based firms. The following themes could be identified in the course's subject area:
-    Organizing projects and organizational characteristics
-    Project leadership and learning
-    Project planning and control


Note that the course will not be included in a degree together with IBB135, IBB136, IPR010 or IPR011.

Organisation

The course has three organized learning arenas: lectures, literature seminars, and project case analysis work performed in groups. While student participation in some of the lectures are voluntary, a number of events during the course include mandatory preparation and participation. The course is divided in two phases; the first phase is an overview of the basics of project management, while the second focus on a selected number of problematic areas within project management.

The course literature will be announced at the latest two weeks before the start of the course.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course is examined in three course modules:
(1) The module 'Project Management Basics' (1.5 hp) is examined by an examination, graded U/G.
(2) The module 'Case Work' (3 hp) is examined by written assignments, graded U/G.
(3) The module 'Home Exam' (3 hp) is examined by written assignments, graded U/G.

The overall course grade is based on the sum of the marks of the above modules, graded U/3/4/5. Se further the Course PM.
