In order to be eligible for a second cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme that owns the course. (If the second cycle course is owned by a first cycle programme, second cycle entry requirements apply.)
Exemption from the eligibility requirement: Applicants enrolled in a programme at Chalmers where the course is included in the study programme are exempted from fulfilling these requirements.

Aim

The aim of this course is to give an overview of metabolomics and proteomics, and how they can be applied to advance understanding of biology and biological effects.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

  • Design a metabolomics or proteomics experiment to help solve a biological question
  • Critically evaluate the use of different methods for metabolomics and proteomics
  • Critically assess different data analysis tools
  • Understand integration of metabolomics and proteomics data with other types of data

Content

New analytical tools allow us to start embracing the complexity of biological systems and using this to understand how they work and can be manipulated. Among the foremost of these are metabolomics and proteomics methods to measure as many metabolites and proteins as possible. These methods can provide novel insight into how different metabolic reactions are connected and can be altered, and are frequently used in both academic and industrial research environments. Besides basic biological research, both techniques are widely used in food, nutrition and health research.


During this course, you will get a broad overview of what can be done with metabolomics and proteomics, and how this can be applied in practice. You will also get the opportunity to generate your own lab-based data, which will be the basis of practical work on data analysis and the course project.

  • Metabolomics using NMR and mass spectrometry
  • Proteomics
  • Advanced applications of proteomics (glycoproteomics, phosphoproteomics)
  • Study design and sample preparation
  • Applications of metabolomics and proteomics in industry
  • Fluxomics
  • Imaging mass spectrometry metabolomics
  • Multivariate data analysis for metabolomics and proteomics
  • Integrating and analysing metabolomics and proteomics data

Organisation

The course includes lectures, study visits, laboratory exercises
and a project.

Literature

There is no textbook for this course. Students will be provided with relevant literature and be expected to use available reputable resources on the internet.

Examination including compulsory elements

The course grade will be based on project work, a seminar, laboratory reports and a written exam.
