Eligibility:

In order to be eligible for a first cycle course the applicant needs to fulfil the general and specific entry requirements of the programme(s) that has the course included in the study programme.

Course specific prerequisites

The same as for admission to the programme.

Aim

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge on how to use mathematical software for numerical computation and visualization,
knowledge that will be used in many courses to follow at the Engineering Mathematics programme.
Furthermore, the aim of the course is to provide an introduction to the computing facilities at Chalmers.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- use MATLAB as a tool for numerical computations and visualization
- use the Symbolic Math Toolbox for MATLAB as a tool for basic symbolic calculations
- use MATHEMATICA as a tool for basic symbolic calculations
- use the computer system and the tools available
- write reports including formulas and graphics

Content

The computer systems LINUX and Windows.
The MATLAB software: Desktop Layout and the Help Browser. Operators, assignment statements, variables and functions. M-files. Graphics. Programming and documenting programs. Graphical user interfaces. Computer arithmetic. Importing and exporting data. Solving equations.
The Symbolic Math Toolbox for MATLAB: Symbolic calculations. Algebra, calculus, solution of equations.
The MATHEMATICA software: Introduction. Symbolic calculations.

Examination

Compulsory computer assignments.
