Eligibility:

Aim

The course aim is to bring knowledge of typical patterns in technical and industrial development and to give an introduction to contemporary research in the field. The period in focus is 1750-2000. The course is for all that would like to deepen their knowledge of the relation between technology and society as well as political and economic change.

Learning outcomes (after completion of the course the student should be able to)

- understand various drivers behind technology change and for the role of technology in the society development.

Content

The course will provide a historical overview of the interplay between technology and society. Examples of themes dealt with are:
- background and meaning of the industrial revolution
- growth of new infrastructural systems under the 1800- and 1900-hundreds
- implications of the information revolution
- technology transfer and adaptation
