Layout of the licentiate thesis

Appearance

Normally the licentiate thesis is published in a series of reports at your department. However, each department or school could issue specific instructions.

There is a standard cover for licentiate thesis at Chalmers containing the University logotype and emblem. This cover may not be used for publications other than licentiate thesis. The same cover is also available for units run together with University of Gothenburg.

An original for printing the standardised licentiate dissertation cover is created by Chalmers Reproservice, extension 8000. You can send the manuscript to Reproservice to allow the cover to be printed.

Format
The recommended format is G5 (169x239 mm). Format A4 (210x297 mm) could, however, be suitable if the articles, publications and/or pictures to be reproduced are too small in G5. The paper original for printing must be A4 format, which is then reduced to G5 (to 80%) at the printers.

Front cover
The following details must always be included on the cover:

  • The title of the thesis, which should not be too long.
  • Possible subtitle.
  • The forename and surname of the author.
  • The department (equivalent).
  • Chalmers University of Technology.
  • The publication location (Göteborg or Göteborg, Sweden) and the year of publication.

In addition, the front page should preferably have an illustration which symbolises the content. An explanatory caption for the illustration could be included on the printing location page.

Spine
The title of the thesis (may not be abbreviated), the name of the author, Chalmers and the year of publication should, if possible, be printed on the spine of the thesis.

Back cover
On the back cover there could be a popular scientific description of the content.

Dissertation and original for printing
Certain introductory pages must be laid out according to the enclosed example in pdf-format. It should be noted that certain details and text are compulsory on the introductory pages as stated below.

The original for the thesis should be printed neatly on white paper in A4-format. This is then reduced to G5 (to 80%) at the printers. The print-out should be on one side of the paper only and correctly paginated (odd page numbers are always on the right-hand side in the document). It can be advisable for practical reasons not to paginate the first pages in the normal way from 1 and instead use Roman numerals I, II, III etc. Begin normal pagination, for example, in Chapter 1.

Articles or publications that are to be reproduced must be from the original (or an off-print), not copies.

Screened photographs must have a screen density of approximately 85 lines/inch, which is approximately 110 lines/inch after being reduced. Unscreened photographs must be submitted separately, not pasted on an original page.

An original can also be submitted as a computer file. If you do so you must submit files to Reproservice converted to pdf-format in Acrobat together with a paper copy for checking. If you have any queries, you can contact Reproservice, extension 8011 or 8000. Other printing companies can accept other file formats although files in MS Word format should be avoided.

Printing location page
See example
The printing location page (= the reverse of the title page) must contain all the details required to search for the report.

This must include:

  • Title.
  • Author.
  • © Forename and surname of the author, the year the report was first published.
  • (The copyright symbol has no legal significance in Sweden, although in certain countries it could be a precondition for ensuring that the work and its translation are protected.)
  • Possible report number, report series and department.
  • Address, fax etc. to facilitate ordering.
  • The name of the printing company. (If the report is not printed but copied at your department, your department's name must be stated instead of the printing company.)
  • The printing location and printing year.
  • It could sometimes also be appropriate on the printing location page to include details of, e.g., special financing sources, bodies that have been involved in co-operation and so on.
  • Captions for any pictures on the cover page.
  • Possible photographers and illustrators.

References
See example
The third page must have a short reference (abstract).

The reference must:

  • Be written in English.
  • Contain the name of the dissertation, possible subtitle, name of the author, department and 'Chalmers University of Technology'.
  • If the thesis is written in Swedish this should also be stated.
  • Be concise and do not exceed more than approximately 250 words.
  • Provide a brief, easily understood overview of the essential content of the thesis (problems, methods, results).
  • Conclude with a maximum of ten key words of significance for computerised information systems.

The reference can also be printed on the back of the presentation sheet, see below.

Other pages
These can be arranged more freely - for example Preface, Acknowledgements, Introduction etc. - although the arrangement must follow the norms for a clear report.

Presentation sheet
See example
A presentation sheet must be printed separately and placed loose in the report. The format should be A5 (148x210 mm). The original can be printed on A4, which is then reduced to A5 at the printers.

The front page can be written in English or Swedish and must contain:

  • The Chalmers logotype.
  • The title of the thesis.
  • Possible subtitle.
  • The forename and surname of the author.
  • Text as follows: 'The licentiate seminar will be held in [place and address] on [date and time].'
  • Possible discussion leader [name and place of work].
  • The text as follows: 'This thesis is available at the [department], Chalmers University of Technology'.
  • Address and telephone number.
  • The Chalmers emblem.

An abstract in English, the same as in the thesis, can be printed on the back of the sheet. The presentation sheet is a cheap way of disseminating information about the results presented in the thesis.
