Kristin Kirchner: Can we trust mathematical models?

In 1997 Myron Scholes received the Nobel prize in Economics for his pricing formula for financial derivatives. Nowadays such formulas are used all over the world every day. But is this usage justified? I will tell the story of the Black-Scholes formula, show possibilities and limitations of mathematical models, and explain how my research can contribute to an improvement of these models.
